I’ve been making portrait paintings for the last 40 years and I’m positive there are things that can’t be expressed solely with words.
That’s why portrait paintings have such a unique power: the power of truth.
For the past 30 years I’ve been lucky enough to have painted some really extraordinary people and I truly believe that a successful portrait painting is a record of the relationship between the artist and the sitter.
It’s the unique energy and trust that comes into place making the whole process of creation possible.
For both the artist and the sitter it’s a process of self discovery.
While I was touring with Noel Gallagher I had the chance to get to know him, not just for the exceptional songwriting skills, his distinct guitar playing style and his witty and outspoken personality but also for his charisma.
Sometimes it’s a small suggestion to the sitter that can change the entire feel of the final portrait. While posing I asked Noel to give me a little more ‘attitude’ to which he instinctively knew what to do. Without a moments notice he pushed his head slightly forward with a tilt to one side and looked at me head on.
This painting was captured backstage just before we performed at the V Festival.
