Celebrating football legends: a tribute in stamps
It has been an incredible journey to meet and paint some of the most iconic footballers in UK history. Each stamp in this unique collection features a member of football’s “dream team,” handpicked for their impact on the sport and the lasting legacy they’ve left behind. This team of legendary footballers includes Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Dave MacKay, George Best, Kevin Keegan, Bryan Robson, John Barnes, Denis Law, Bobby Charlton, John Charles, and Jimmy Greaves.
The players: a legacy of football excellence
Imagine stepping into your home, greeted by a breathtaking work of art that captures not just an image, but the very essence of what you hold dear. This isn’t just a painting – it’s your story, frozen in time, ready to inspire generations.
For four decades, Andrew Kinsman has painted some of the world’s most discerning individuals. From rock royalty like Kasabian and Noel Gallagher to actual royalty, Andrew’s brush has captured the souls of the extraordinary.
Crafting the composite artwork: a blend of tradition and creativity
The artwork itself posed an exciting challenge: creating a composite piece that would capture each player individually while still forming an unified “team shot” when assembled together. This design evokes the feel of a traditional team photo, adding a touch of nostalgia and a sense of unity to the collection. Each stamp celebrates the individual contribution of each player while showcasing the synergy they share as footballing legends.
Collaborating with Royal Mail and the National Football Museum
Creating this unique tribute involved close collaboration with Royal Mail and the National Football Museum. Working alongside experts, archivists, and curators, we carefully selected players who have been celebrated in the Hall of Fame established by the museum. This Hall of Fame honors those whose careers have significantly shaped football in the UK and left an indelible mark on the sport. By focusing on Hall of Fame inductees, the stamps not only celebrate these icons but also tie them to a legacy recognized by fans, historians, and the players themselves.
Selection criteria: honoring icons from a memorable era (1963–1990s)
In narrowing down the list of players, Royal Mail considered an era that would resonate deeply with both longtime fans and current generations. By focusing on players whose senior careers peaked between 1963 and the 1990s, the collection brings forward figures who remain relatable and inspirational today. Many of these players enjoy a “cult following” and are widely acknowledged for their brilliance on the field—icons like George Best, whose skill and style remain subjects of admiration and fascination.
The unveiling at Wembley Stadium: a personal connection to the legends
The unveiling at Wembley Stadium was a profound moment, not only for the fans and press in attendance but also for me personally. Meeting these legends face-to-face brought back vivid memories of my childhood idols. Gordon Banks, for instance, was my personal hero. My first dream, even before my passion for art or music took root, was to follow in his footsteps and become a professional goalkeeper. Standing alongside him and the other players in this iconic setting, it felt like coming full circle—a dream realized, with memories flooding back of childhood ambitions and the inspiration that these players had instilled in me.
Reflecting on the impact: a stamp collection beyond commemoration
This stamp collection transcends mere commemoration; it serves as a bridge connecting generations of football fans, celebrating not only the history but the ongoing legacy of football in the UK. Each player, with their unique story and contribution, reminds us of the magic, the drama, and the sheer joy that football brings to our lives. This collection is a tribute to their unforgettable impact on the sport, uniting fans and honoring the legends whose names will echo through football history for years to come.
